The greatness of Christianity lies in the fact that something special happened to Jesus Christ which had never happened to any other human being—he was raised from the dead to die no more. God Almighty raised His Son from the dead, and in doing so, He marked him out, openly designated him, as the Son of God.
Romans 1:3,4:
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
Beyond any shadow of a doubt, the resurrection proved who Jesus Christ was. When Jesus Christ emerged from the tomb, he was not the beaten and tattered man who had been laid to rest 72 hours previous. He came forth with a new body. This pivotal moment in mankind’s history is what God utilizes to illustrate the quality and freshness of life we can anticipate and live each day. The same power and might of God’s loving hand that raised our savior from the grave enables us to walk in newness of life, in a lifelong newness or freshness.
Romans 6:4:
...as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
The “we” in this verse are the born-again believers. At the time of the new birth we received the gift of holy spirit, referred to as the new man.
Ephesians 4:24:
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
As we walk by that brand-new spiritual man, the quality of our body and soul life can also take on a newness, a new quality—positively improved upon what we formerly lived. This is what the word “newness” in Romans 6:4 refers to. We can live our life in a whole new manner, a fresh and vibrant manner.
II Corinthians 5:17:
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature [new creation]: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Because of God’s new creation in us and our positively improved upon quality of life, we now have the spiritual power to serve others. We have the power to love them with God’s love and offer them God’s peace, joy, strength, and knowledge. Life can be new for them also.
Romans 7:6:
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
As we live in this lifelong newness and freshness of life—walking with believing, honesty, love, wisdom—we are giving witness of the resurrection. We approach each day with a renewed perspective, a fresh approach. When we walk by the power of God’s gift of holy spirit in us, we are proving to the world that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Let us walk in newness of life!
