God’s Word tells us that we can trust in Him, place confidence in Him, at all times and that He is a shelter for us. From the Gospels we can see that Jesus Christ’s entire life was one of trusting God his Father. And Jesus Christ left us an example, according to I Peter 2:21, “that ye should follow his steps.”
Jesus knew God would always perform His Word. How did Jesus know this? Because he knew the testimony of God’s Word—he learned from the records in the Old Testament of believers who put their trust in God. For example:
Moses was confident God would deliver the children of Israel from the bonds of Egypt.
Exodus 14:13:
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.
Rahab, a Gentile and the great-great-grandmother of David, hid the spies of Israel because she believed in their God.
Joshua 2:11:
...for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
Ruth, also a Gentile and the great-grandmother of David, trusted in the Lord God of Israel as declared by Boaz, who would become her husband.
Ruth 2:12:
The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
David trusted God as a young man when he fought the giant Goliath, and he continued to trust Him throughout his life.
I Samuel 17:37:
David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine....
II Samuel 22:1-3:
And David spake unto the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
Hezekiah, the great king of Judah, had tremendous trust in the Lord God of Israel.
II Kings 18:5,6:
He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
For he clave to the Lord, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses.
As Jesus Christ kept these Old Testament records of deliverance in his mind and stayed focused on the will of his Father, he knew God would deliver him in every situation, even from death. For example, throughout the Gospels we see him boldly and confidently declare that he would be raised from the dead [e.g., Matthew 16:21; 17:23; 20:17-19; Mark 9:31; Luke 9:22]. We know now Jesus Christ’s trust in God was justified—God did raise him from the dead.
We too have access to God and can walk in the steps of Jesus Christ, having the same trust and confidence in God to carry out His Word.
