The God of Faithfulness

The God of Faithfulness

What makes something worth trusting in? For example, what about a bank—why do I trust in my bank? One reason is that over the years, my bank has shown me that it is faithful to carry out what it promises it will carry out. It consistently fulfills its word. But does that mean I can utterly rely on my bank no matter what? No. Even banks have been unreliable due to certain circumstances and have not been able to always fulfill their word. Wouldn’t it be comforting to be able to trust in something or someone that is always faithful? We can! The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is always worth trusting in because His faithfulness never sways due to circumstances. He is the God of faithfulness, and the more we understand just how faithful God is, the more encouraged we will be to trust in Him no matter what.

God’s Word declares that He is a God of faithfulness Who will always fulfill His Word. In Deuteronomy 32:4 we find a description of His faithful nature.

Deuteronomy 32:4:
He [God] is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

The King James Version of this verse reads that He is “a God of truth.” This word “truth” is translated from the Hebrew word emunah, meaning “faithfulness.” Emunah is translated “faithfulness” eighteen times in the King James Version. And in some versions of the Bible emunah is translated “faithfulness” in Deuteronomy 32:4 as well.

Deuteronomy 32:4 [The Amplified Bible]:
He is the Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are law and justice. A God of faithfulness without breach or deviation, just and right is He.

We have a God of faithfulness Who is without breach or deviation. Man-made systems may fail to fulfill their promises at times, but not God. We can trust in Him always. How exhilarating it is to know that amidst a world full of uncertainty, God is always worth trusting in.

By learning more details about our God’s faithfulness, we can be encouraged to trust in Him no matter what situations we face. During the in-residence portion of my Way Corps training, I saw for myself just how faithful our God is. About one month before my fellow trainees and I were set to take a long-awaited trip to Camp Gunnison, I sustained a painful foot injury. All of a sudden, I began to have fears that in light of my condition, I might not be able to go to the camp. I needed help, and I needed help soon. After talking with a friend, I quickly realized that a big part of what I needed was to remind myself of God’s Word where He promises that He is a God of faithfulness. So I read verses like these:

Deuteronomy 7:9:
Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.

Psalms 119:90:
Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.

I Corinthians 1:9:
God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

I Thessalonians 5:24 [The Amplified Bible]:
Faithful is He Who is calling you [to Himself] and utterly trustworthy, and He will also do it [fulfill His call by hallowing and keeping you].

After reading about God’s faithfulness, I realized that I had no reason to doubt that He was going to fulfill His Word. When I was letting the circumstances of my injury cloud my mind, I was having a difficult time, but as I kept reading about His faithfulness, I was encouraged to put my absolute trust in Him. I took the best actions I knew to take physically and then trusted in God to do the rest. Can you guess what happened? When it was time to head to Camp Gunnison, my foot had completely healed. What a tremendous resource the Word is to us in understanding more about our God!

The more we understand about God, the more we will realize we can always trust in Him because He is always faithful to His Word. Isn’t it comforting to have a God that we can trust in always? As men and women who have decided to put their trust in the one true God, we never have to wonder if our God is able to fulfill His Word. When we read God’s Word, we can be encouraged and encourage others to trust in our faithful God, remembering that He is not able to let us down, and He never will.
