If God Be for Us, Who Can Be Against Us?

If God Be for Us, Who Can Be Against Us?

Have you ever considered what it is like to be on a winning team? What kind of attitude might you have as a player on that winning team? A few years ago, our family’s favorite sports team won the world championship. For months after the final game, these players would refer to themselves as champions, as winners. They walked around with an extra bounce in their step and radiated confidence. They knew that they were the best in the world. As born-again believers, we are on the winning team in life—God’s team. With God on our side, we can have an attitude of being more than conquerors in all of life’s situations.

Because God is on our side, we are on the winning team and no person, challenge, or situation can prevail against us.

Romans 8:31:
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

We do have an adversary, the Devil, who endeavors to oppose us. But no challenge that our adversary tries to throw at us can defeat us because God is on our side. God made us completely, completely, absolutely complete in Christ (Colossians 2:10). The challenges of life may come, but no challenge—physically, mentally, or spiritually—can defeat us with God on our side. We are on the winning team!

Romans 8:29 shows us how God chose us for His team.

Romans 8:29:
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

We were predestinated. This means that God knew in His foreknowledge that we would believe, so He marked us out distinctly beforehand.

Not only are we predestinated with God on our side, but we are also justified and glorified, as Romans 8:30 highlights.

Romans 8:30:
Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

In justifying us, God legally declared us acceptable to Him. He acquitted us of guilt and sin. How freeing! As born-again believers, our victory over the adversary is legally legal, and the adversary has no right to win.

God also glorified us. To glorify means to “invest with dignity, make anyone important.” In glorifying us, God gave us importance. We are important to God! He wants us on His team—the winning team. With God on our side, we can have the attitude of being more than conquerors in all of life’s situations. As we hold fast to the promises of God, we will win in the competition of life.

Recently, I was working on a large and somewhat overwhelming project. I found myself thinking, “I can’t do this,” “I don’t have any idea what to do next,” and “Why did they pick me for this?” Every morning for about a week, these negative thoughts would flood my mind. I had adopted a losing attitude. To fix my losing attitude, I started to recall the promises of God, remembering that God is on my side, He predestinated me, He justified me, He glorified me, He is for me, and I can succeed! As I continued to hold fast to these promises, my attitude improved, and the project was completed with great success. We can always have this attitude of being more than conquerors because there is no circumstance, no man, no obstacle that can defeat God’s team.

God has already assembled the championship winning team, and we are on it. We get to win in every situation as we believe God’s Word, no matter what, because if God be for us, no one can be against us! So let’s hold fast to God’s promises and win!
